Glima
Norse wrestling.
It survived as a sport on Iceland and
is now reintroduced in the Nordic countries.
Glima has three styles . As a sport
the fixed forms Back-hold and Trouser-grip. When practicing combat Glima the
Free-gripping style is used.
Combat Glima can be fought two
different ways:
As the sum total of what you have
learned and trained, balancing attack and defense to make proficiency and
strength work optimally.
Or going berserk, where technique is
just the outer part of what you are doing. What you really are going for is
winning even before you are coming to grips, by breaking the will of your
opponent using a no holds barred attack and no thought whatsoever for
defense. By speed and strength you force the opponent to defend himself. And
no one can win only by defending. To succeed going berserk the commitment
must be absolute, bluffing is impossible. What is mobilized is more than
cold calculation, and absence of berserk is felt at once by the opponent.
Going berserk is much more than what
is mentioned here. But to really understand you have to do it, reading is
not sufficient.
